East Lake

Situated along Candler Road, East Lake is defined by its namesake East Lake Golf Club, the home course of legendary golfer Bobby Jones. The oldest course in Atlanta and the site of the PGA Tour Championship, this bit of green has put the neighborhood on the map.

Once part of a plantation (its main home, Meadow Nook, can still be seen across from the golf course), East Lake became a streetcar suburb in the late 1890s. Atlantans flocked to the lake’s comfy bungalows to get away from the sweltering summer heat. Soon, Coke tycoon Asa Candler bought up the surrounding land to form the now famous golf club.

Ever since, East Lake has become a popular destination with well-to-do urbanites who adore the neighborhood’s 1910s to 1940s bungalows and cottages. Atlanta’s easternmost neighborhood, East Lake has its own MARTA station and numerous indie coffee shops like Perc, My Coffee Shop and 2nd & Hosea.

For a little grub, residents enjoy tapas-style apps at Poor Hendrix, Asian eats at Salaryman and Rockin’ Burgers at Mix’D Up. While the area is known for its golf club, East Lake Park is no slouch either. Here you’ll find a playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, and the Birds Nest, a field owned by ATL softball team, the Edgewood Ghetto Birds.
